Dont Worry About The How
By: Darbright Ng
Do you worry about the "how" of getting things done? Is there something that you really, really want but just can't see how to do it? Do you get frustrated, angry, moody or subdued when something you expect to happen doesn't happen through the channel you expected?
When you set goals and a direction in life, you might be anxious and worried about how you're going to accomplish it.
You could read personal development books, study business concepts and theories, learn ideas, strategies and systems about how other people did things and still get stressed out by the "how" of accomplishing your goal.
It's something that a lot of people go through when they're anxious about "how" they can possibly get their result. Some examples of the things that worry most people are:
The majority of people focus on the "how" to do things, and worry about their ability to accomplish the tasks. It's usually more about "getting" than being in the position of "receiving". The common perception is if you're not taking immediate "action", you're not going to move anywhere, be anyone or have anything in life.
This is also a reason why "how to" articles and books are extremely popular. Everyone wants to know how to be richer, more attractive, happier, healthier, sexier, and so on.
Action Isn't The Only Thing
While action is an important and crucial aspect of getting things done, focusing on the "how" alone creates unnecessary stress and anxiety.
If you expect to get that promotion, and you don't, it can cause you to be upset, frustrated or in some cases even depressed. Likewise if you're in a sales oriented job, where you expected to hit your target quota from closing a specific huge deal with a client and it doesn't happen, you might go into a tailspin of self-demoralizing thinking.
The sole focus on the "how" can create stress and cause your creative mind to lock up. And when this happens, it causes even more anxiety when you can't see a way out.
Relaxing and Focusing On Your Desired End Result
When you're solely focused on the "how" of getting your desired end result, you take your eyes off what you really want. The moment the particular channel you're depending on to deliver your end result hits a hiccup, it can cause stress.
By relaxing, and realizing that there are alternative ways possible even if you can't see them now, your creative mind will be freed from stress and help you find another way to achieve the same desired outcome.
So if, or when, you do meet hiccups along your path towards your end result, remember to focus your attention on what you really want. Realize that the current "how" may not always be the best way to move forward, and that if things don't work out, you can and will always find alternative ways.
If you're not getting that promotion you wanted, don't get frustrated or depressed. Relax, and focus on your end result. Is your desired end result getting that job promotion, or having a higher salary and doing something you really love?
By keeping the bigger perspective in mind, it helps tremendously in finding alternative paths to the same destination. Look around, search for alternatives and ideas that you might have overlooked in your state of worry and anxiety. You might just end up getting a better job offer, get a different promotion from what you were expecting, or find even something better.
So don't worry about the "how".
Focus on what you really want, and allow life to bring you other, possibly even better, solutions.
